What’s TRUST Got to Do With It?

Synopsis

In recent months, I heard a radio interview where the young person interviewed suggested that she trusted Donald Trump because he says what’s on his mind. I heard the same idea expressed several times since, right up to the U.S. Federal Election Day. Every time I heard that sentiment expressed, I thought to myself that the person speaking was explaining not that Donald Trump was to be trusted, but rather that he might be transparent, or perhaps predictable (assuming that what he says, what is on his mind is made in good faith, is truthful). Transparency nor predictability are synonyms to trust. Saying what is on one’s mind does not mean that a person is to be trusted. It seems to me that people have a deficient understanding of what trust is.
